Understanding the basic chemistry of colors is essential to create a perfect looking outfit. Without it, even the most expensive clothes in the world would be unable to make you look handsome. A well thought color scheme helps bring a glow to a boring outfit while toning down the loud ones. Thus it is something you should never overlook when building up a wardrobe. We’ve started the discussion below with the basics of color wheel along with how to use the colors when creating an ensemble for yourself.

Remember the times when you’ve fought with your tailor because he didn’t sew the perfect fit? While a proper fit is important to pull off the look of any outfit, the right colors play a similar role to make or break an attire. For this purpose, having the basic knowledge of the color wheel is of utmost significance so you’re able to incorporate these basics into choosing the right colors that complement your personality. Our aim is to help you develop knowledge necessary to properly mix and match clothes so you can attain the look most men strive for.

Color wheel was developed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666 and comprises of 12 colors which are also called hues. This wheel forms the basics of color theory which states that every color is connected to or is in gradation with the color right next to it. Coordinating these colors well is the key to an elegant outfit. Coordination is deemed simple when you use colors that are closer to each other for instance, a blue shirt with a bluish green striped tie. Contrary to this, mixing yellow with violet may get messy because these two are far away in the color wheel and are hence remotely related to each other.

A color wheel has three basic colors: red, yellow and blue. They are called primary hues because it’s impossible to create them by mixing other colors. All other hues are a combination of these three that create a harmonic effect in the color wheel. The key to a perfect outfit is that all the colors present in it should complement each other, creating a pleasant look rather than seeming like a canvas of an amateur artist with all colors jumbled up, creating a chaotic look.

Combining two or more colors is essential for the versatility of an outfit. Of course nobody wants to look boring with a dull, monotonous dressing. The important part is to mix colors in a harmonious way so that the outfit doesn’t look disorganized or poorly managed. For that, you must know the following definitions that are important to describe any color in an outfit.

CORE COLOR is defined as the dominant color in an outfit. For instance, if you’re wearing a navy blue jacket on a white dress shirt, navy blue is the dominant color for it’s the most visible one.

ACCENT COLOR is defined as the secondary hues that are part of any outfit. They may be complementary, triad, analogous or neutral.

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS are two shades that lie across each other in the color wheel.

TRIAD COLORS are three hues that lie at an angle of 60 degree to each other on the color wheel. They are always equidistant to each other.

ANALOGOUS COLORS are colors that lie adjacent to each other on the color wheel and share a common border.

The best co-ordinations are the one that are in accordance with the above stated concepts. Obviously you can’t choose an outfit that exactly matches these combinations but sticking close to it would save you the trouble of looking odd in a gathering. The concept of color wheel is introduced to act as a guide and reference when choosing your dress. You’re not obliged to follow it wherever you go.

For a great outfit, you first need to understand the color and contrast of your own body. Get a clear idea of your skin tone, eye color and hair color because they play a major role in complementing whatever you wear. This will help you in deciding that which category you would fall into.

High contrast men are those whose hair color and skin color is absolutely different for instance, men with black hair and white skin. All such men should try to adapt the same contrast in their clothing as well. This can be achieved by wearing a dark colored suit over a lighter colored dress shirt. The best choice would be a navy blue or black suit with a white dress shirt or maybe a charcoal grey suit with a blue shirt. They should wear ties that are bright enough to stand out from the shirt but not look gaudy at the same time. Mimicking their natural contrast in their suiting would do wonders in enhancing their overall look.

They are the ones having almost similar skin and hair tone thus imparting minimal or subtle contrast. All men with light skin having light hair, red hair or no hair fall into this category. Because of this absence of contrast in their complexion, they should go for outfits that are monochromatic and not too loud. A significant contrast in their clothing may turn out to be pretty garish. The most suitable option may be a dark blue or brown dress shirt in combination with a dark colored suit like navy blue and black. The tie should always match with the color of the suit to give an overall balanced appearance.

This category includes men that don’t fit into either of the above mentioned categories. They usually have a dark skin tone with equally dark hair or those with fairer skin and gray to white hair. Choosing the right color for this category is a real challenge for each individual would have different preferences and choices. However in general, dark skinned men should follow those with high contrast while the light skinned men should go for the low contrast group. With that being said, it is recommended that these men choose any outfit from the above two groups without going too far towards the extreme line. Besides, coordinating your outfit with the weather and nature of the event would also be helpful in making you look better.

It won’t be wrong to say that coordinating colors in an outfit is more or less a science. Using the above knowledge to assist you in determining your personal style is what we aim to do. The beginners may follow the color wheel guidelines and they’ll see their taste improving with time. Good luck!
