Necktie accessories are not just a stylish addition to your attire but it helps you keep your tie clean when leaning over the dining table. It’s also great for keeping the tie knots in place, especially those that slightly pop out of place. The advent of tie clips created a sensation in the neckwear industry and in the next two minutes you’d realize why.
This piece of men’s jewelry is also referred to as a tie clasp in many parts of the world and both names are used interchangeably. It’s not only a great addition to every gentleman’s wardrobe but is a life savior when it comes to preventing your tie from entangling with the meal on the table.
The history of this stylish necktie accessory dates back to late nineteenth century. Before then, men used to hold their ties in place using decorated pins which later became famous as the ‘tie pins’. With the changing trends, men’s neckwear became modified and the use of finely woven silk ties was rising. The use of vertical pins to hold the tie eventually became obsolete because the fragile weaves of silk ties would unravel when tied with a pin. This led to the invention of a completely different necktie accessory – the tie clip.
Tie clips are the simple, straightforward solution for ties that are made up of delicate, intricate fabric. Now instead of sliding the pin in and out of the fabric, a flat piece of metal bent into a tight ‘U’ shape is used to slide around both sides of the tie which helps to keep it in place. The initial purpose of tie clips was to secure both the tail ends of the tie but men later started using it to clip the tie to the dress shirt so that it doesn’t swing away from the body. It is indeed a simple piece of art that instantly became popular because it was convenient to use and saved the expensive neck wears from accidental mishaps too. It was first worn only by aristocrats, dignitaries and celebrities but later became a common practice among men of the middle class.
STYLES & FASHION
The origin of tie clip coincides with the time period where people were fond of elaborate and decadent dressing rather than following the hierarchical rules of fashion. This is the reason why modern tie clips are made up of simple metal and exhibit artistic designs instead of being studded with gaudy jewels. Some gentlemen even pay a huge chunk of their salary to buy novelty tie clips that may have the company’s logo, flags or other vintage stuff. Others are more interested in buying an elegant diamond studded clip or the one having gold mixed with precious stones. Thus tie clips are as versatile as they’re useful.
When it comes to buying a tie clip, there is no hard and fast rule regarding the designs. It’s a matter of an individual’s personal preference and you may choose any style, shape, color and material that please you. However, your accessory should always be in accordance with the event you’ll be wearing it to. For instance, in a work setting or during formal business meetings, a small, restrained tie clip having only one color of metal (either gold or silver) would look appropriate. Casual events give you the leniency to opt for more abstract, modern art styles and vintage designs. Remember that the material of the clip plays an important role in its overall appearance so choose something that is both decent and sophisticated.
The best part is that tie clips are one of the few things in menswear that never go out of fashion. Whether you’re in your twenties or have crossed the milestone of golden jubilee, you’ll always look trendy when wearing a tie clip. However, it’s advisable that you don’t wear a tie clip along with a vest because it would make your attire look too much stuffed.
HOW TO WEAR A TIE CLIP
Once you’ve brought this little piece of style, it’s mandatory to learn the proper way to wear it. Well, it’s as simple as the design of the accessory itself. All you have to do is slide the two sides of the clip around both the tails of your necktie and the edge of your shirt placket in such a way that all of these are sandwiched inside the clip. Try going from right to left else you won’t be able to clip the placket of your dress shirt. Push the clip until its U-band is snug against the side of the tie.
The best position of your tie clip is slightly above the center button of your dress shirt. You may alter the position as per your desire but the key is to keep it a couple of inches away from either the top or the bottom. To take off the clip, gently bend the end a little wider to slip off the tie fabric or simply wear it with thinner ties so you don’t have to face trouble in popping off the clip.
These days, hinged tie clips are also available in the market. They are different from the conventional clips in a way that they have a little more bite to them which keeps everything firmly in place. The only disadvantage of hinged tie clips is that they can dent the tie’s surface and if the fabric is fragile like silk, you may end up having a permanent damage. However, it’s still a better choice than poking holes in the tie while using a tie pin.
